Go Skate Day
Saturday started out a little slow with the rain threatening to keep the pavement moist. With an hour until start, Mother Nature sent in a little breeze to blow the clouds away and dry up the parking lot just in time to kick off the festivities. The grill was hot and the wieners were speedy. Things were under way and there was not one inch of the Parking lot that went unskated.
We had 6 Games Of SKATE, each sponsored by a separate company. First up was the Lakai game with Ben Mullinkosson coming out on top. The Dakine game was taken by Jagar Davis in his tattered and torn Nikes. The Third game sponsored by Neff headwear was won by Dante Edwards. Next up was probably the most riveting with a trick after trick battle between our own Butch and Drew Dunford. In the end Drew came out on top in a game we thought would never end. Our final 13 and up game was sponsored by Famous Stars and Straps and ended up with our own Ryan Berena topping Michael Bembea for the top spot. With one more game to go brought to us from Adio shoes the little red head Henry Levine took home the prize bag and earned himself a spot in the Final Nixon SKATE show down. followed up by a final game of all the winners. In our final game the winners of all the previous game played for a Nixon Player watch and a few other Nixon goodies. Henry Levine started off and was quick to get letters on half of the field, but in the end Ben Mullenkoson walk away with the Player with ease.
Onto the other comps, we had a stall comp on one of the ledges out front the kids were creeping and there was a little chaos early on but once everyone figured out the groove trick went down left and right. In the end it was Nico Rizzo took home the top honor with a Nose Stall switch-up to Backside flip out.
The DC high ollie comp was crazy at first just ollie after ollie after ollie. The kids were just pushing each other higher and higher. As the bar went higher the field got smaller until it was down to one: Mike Bembea. Mike left with a new pair of kicks and some bragging rights for the day.
After the high ollie contest we raised the bar a bit and started the IPath high jump contest. Bringing back a little old school flavor and testing the skateboarding AND track skills of the riders was definitely fun to watch. As we raised the bar to some where around chest high our own Ryan Berena proved he could jump the highest under pressure. A honorable mention goes out to Ben Mullenkosson who actually jumped the highest point but not until after the contest was over.
After being hounded to get out the brand new Element Flat bar the kids practiced up for a while and we had a best trick comp, what better way to break in a new rail. Many tricks landed, many tricks almost landed, but none could top Mason Betts back feeble to FS 180 out, (he actually did one with a tail grab too). Watch out for this kid, he’s small but he’s definitely showing the big boys how to shred.
After all the comps were done, prizes were given out, and the hot dogs had all been eaten everyone kept on doing what they were supposed to be doing and the skating continued. Even as we broke down, cleaned up and closed the shop the kids we still shredding as I pulled out of the parking lot to head home. It’s good to see skaters taking advantage of the day that was set for them. We have the best and most dedicated customers and this just help prove it to me.
Thanks guys Matt
P.S. a big thanks to all of the companies and reps who helped put this on. Especially Tom from Element for sending us a brand new flatbar to session, Brain from DC for helping with the Judging, and to Moose from Dakine for his expertise at the grill! :) Most importantly, thank you to all of the skaters who showed up to skate we couldn’t of done this without you guys!!!!!
